A little work, but worth it.

I have been coloring my hair for many years with a permanent hair color. I recently decided to try something a little more natural, as my hair was getting thin and breaking off in small pieces. I did some research online and decided to go with Hannah Natural. I have used this product for a couple of months and I am pleased with it. My hair has regained its health, becoming thick, full, and shiny again. The instructions are not real specific, but with trial and error, I have come up with a system that works for me. The dark brown henna leaves a reddish hue on my hair, so I mix it with Hannah Indigo. There are two packages of powder in each box. I put one package of henna and one of indigo into a 4 cup glass measure and add 2 cups of very warm, almost hot, distilled water with a couple drops of essential oil added. I stir it until all the lumps are gone and let it cool about 15 minutes. While the mixture is cooling, I prepare for coloring by gathering towels, cotton balls, a plastic grocery bag, a squeeze bottle, a comb, and a wash cloth.I fasten a dark hand towel around my neck. Then I pour half of the mixture into the squeeze bottle (I cut the opening a little larger so that the mixture can come out). I part my hair with a comb and squeeze the mixture out, just like I would do for regular hair coloring, parting and squeezing color in sections. When all of the roots have been saturated, I take the remaining mixture and pour it slowly over the rest of my hair, rubbing it evenly through to the ends. I take a plastic grocery bag and cover the whole mess, twisting it in the front so that it is closed tightly. I twist a dark bath towel over the bag, then poke cotton balls around the hairline. This is important, as the mixture will run and go everywhere if you don't. I still get the occasional drip, so I keep a dark wash cloth handy, just in case. After two hours, I get in the shower and thoroughly wet my hair, getting as much of the mixture out as possible. My hair is a little stiff and brittle feeling at this point, so I put a palm full of conditioner into my hair, starting at the roots and working through to the ends. I let it sit while I shower. I rinse my hair again, until the water runs clear. I condition for a second time, using less this time, rubbing it through and rinsing immediately. I really rub my scalp to make sure I get all the henna off. My hair is soft and smelling pretty good at this point. That's it! I dry and style as usual. My hair is soft and full and just the color I want it without harsh dyes or chemicals. My hair is longish, so I use two packages, but you can use less if your hair is shorter.

Effective

I switched to this after a year of coloring my hair with chemical dyes. My hair took 3 or 4 tries to finally accept the henna, but once it "took", I've been very happy with it. I have shoulder length black hair and my hair is softer and happier now with henna. I also color my eyebrows with it.Here are some things I found effective for me:1. The day before I color, I wash my hair with shampoo and skip the conditioner2. Just before coloring, I wash my face with soap, to remove oiliness from the hair line and eyebrows.3. NOTE: Because I have dark skin, I do NOT put vaseline on my hair line, in order to maximize the color's effectiveness at the hairline4. I use both packs of henna in the box for one coloring - yes it gets a bit gloopy but the shower cap keeps it from making a mess5. I add the recommended salt and it gives me a nice dark color6. After coloring per instructions, I wash out the henna and do not apply any shampoo or conditioner7. For 2 days after I color, I do not wash my face with soap, avoid any face lotion at the hair line, and do not shampoo my hair8. After 2 days, I wash with soap for my face and shampoo/conditioner for my hair.Note: Years ago, when Henna Hut was available on amazon, I used to use them, they are good too, but they used to leave my hair looking green at the roots for the first couple of days. With this one, I don't have that experience.

Nice Brown color

This is technically not henna, it is a mix of various plants that are traditionally used to dye things. It works just fine and produces a brownish color. It does not work any better or worse than other brands, which is good as far as I'm concerned.Remember the basics of using plant based dyes if you are not familiar with it: First, this is just ground up plant material. The plants contain chemicals that stain things various colors; there's no magic to it. You need to soak the powder for awhile to extract the dye - think of it like brewing cold water coffee. If you poured cold water over coffee grounds, you would basically get nothing. But if you soaked coffee grounds in cold water for several hours, you would get a brown liquid (coffee). Second, the dye (liquid) has to come into contact with your hair, and it takes time. This means your hair has to be squeaky clean; any oil, conditioner, etc will prevent the liquid from contacting the hair. It has to stay wet; if it dries, then it does nothing, just like trying to stain a white shirt with dry coffee grounds. It takes a loooong time; I've found by trial and error that 2 hours works well, anything beyond that is pointless. You don't need to sleep with it, and you don't need to leave it on for days. Also remember that this is a plant, and it smells like a plant. I personally don't like it, but it's not horrible and the smell is strongest when your hair is wet, and the odor is pretty much gone after a few normal showers / shampoos.

No more allergies

It covers my grey roots but the color washed off in a few shampoos. As long as I have no allergies, I will continue to use it. Just have to use it more often.

Not a fan

I tried henna due to not wanting to use chemicals, I'm pregnant. The smell made me sick every day for a week or more even after shampooing. The smell lingered and its bad. It's messy, takes a long time however; the color is rich, shiny and healthy. I don't think I will try it again.
