Jessica Jones: The Complete First Season

“Marvel’s Jessica Jones: The Complete Season 1” introduces Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Rachel Taylor as Patricia “Trish” Walker, Wil Traval as Will Simpson, Eka Darville as Malcolm Ducasse, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, and David Tennant as Kilgrave with Rosario Dawson making some guest appearances as Claire Temple. The season focuses on Jones, an alcoholic private investigator, who pushes away everyone close to her while investigating Kilgrave, a man with mind control abilities who once controlled her. She meets Luke Cage and they bond over their mutual special powers while Jones also does P.I. work for Jeri Hogarth, a powerful attorney who’s not above bending the law to win in court.The series adapted Brian Michael Bendis’ “Alias” comics, with the first episode fairly faithfully adapting the first issue. Though this series tones down some of the comic book elements – for example, Kilgrave goes by his name rather than calling himself the Purple Man (and the show even states that he chose Kilgrave as a name because it sounded cool) – it does maintain the gritty realism of Bendis’ comics. Like all of the Netflix Marvel series, it uses color and lighting to evoke a mood and create a distinctive look just like a comic book, in this case making use of blues and purples. Though the series takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it only makes the occasional references to the films and instead stands on its own, while working to set up characters who appear in the other Netflix series like Luke Cage and Jeri Hogarth.

Before I watched this first season of "Jessica Jones" it would not have occurred to me that anyone would try to blend superheroes with film noir or that anyone would try to turn beloved former "Doctor Who" lead actor David Tennant into a sociopathic villain.Clearly, my lack of imagination is on full display here because the producers who did both things in the opening season of "Jessica Jones" have fashioned a winning formula that is remarkable not only for its willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of conventional storytelling but also for their decision to include exceptionally strong female characters as the primary and secondary leads of the series.Krysten Ritter as Jessica and Rachael Taylor as her best friend Patsy Walker are outstanding in their roles. Theirs is a complicated relationship but they make it work although they do suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune in more than one episode. Tennant, as arch-villain Kilgrave, is thoroughly scary. His casual cruelty when it comes to abusing his power to bend people to his will comes through in every scene he appears in; a real tribute to his acting ability and to the writers who gave him a wonderful character to work with.The cinematography is dark, brooding, and perfectly suited to the storylines in this first season. The scripts are tightly written, the direction sure-handed, and the remainder of the cast - especially science fiction icon Carrie-Ann Moss as a ruthless lawyer - is well suited to the roles they were chosen for.I could go on but because this season has been reviewed many times already I'll simply say that I enjoyed it immensely and can't wait for Season Two.

Let's address the elephant in the room first the price. The price is what it is me personally I love this show I read the comics when I was in Jounier High and when I heard that Netflix and Marvel were making this show words couldn't express how excited I was about this show so price didn't really affect me. Either wait for the price to drop or just purchase a Netflix account but I know for me I love actual disk copies that's why I needed this. The product itself is very normal the cover is fine but inside (I'll leave a photo) is very cool as u can see photos of some of the best moments of the show while the other side shows what the episodes are called and what disk u can find the episode on. The back basically explains the plot and really goes out of their way and tell you that this show is not for children. For me this was a must have item and fits well in my MCU Movie Collection.

Unlike "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." & "Agent Carter", "Jessica Jones" is darker & adult-oriented instead of family-friendly like the two shows on ABC. Unlike the kind, female superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jessica Jones is an abrasive, rude superhero with superhuman strength & she drinks (.....a lot). In this season, Jessica Jones takes on a case that leads to her confrontation with Killgrave (a.k.a. The Purple Man). Also the MCU introduces the superhero Luke Cage who have an on-and-off romance with Jessica Jones and Trish Walker who will become the masked superhero Hellcat."Jessica Jones" is a great show and Krysten Ritter was superior as Jessica Jones while David Tennant steals the show as the villainous Killgrave. I wish Marvel would wise up and release the rest of the series on DVD.

Jessica has super strength and runs and jumps better than any Olympian. She wanted to be a superhero but was captured by a supervillain who forced her to villainy. She escaped his grasp, but can she recover from her time with him. Then he returns. What can she do?

I was grateful that the DVD series arrived earlier than expected. I love having my favorite shows on physical media so this one will be included with my collection of other series/movies.

Con Jessica Jones, Netflix añadía una nueva serie de Marvel a su catálogo y aunque al final parece ser que no van a ser canon en el UCM, lo cierto es que la serie está bien e introduce a todo un villano Marvel como Kilgrave. Buena realización, interesante y si no la pillas así tarde o temprano la dejarás de ver porque a Netflix se le acabará el contrato que tienen con su productora (una lástima que no podamos hacernos con la 2 y 3 temporada porque simplemente hayan sido muy vagos como para editarla en físico). En cuanto a la edición, blu-ray americano con sólo inglés pero compatible con los lectores de España.

I'm not a big "Super Hero" movie fan, but in Jessica Jones, like the Dark Knight trilogy, super powers are secondary, pretty much irrelevant next to the human element. This is a well acted, almost flawlessly told story; powerful when viewed with an understanding of its child sexual abuse analogy and the profoundly damaging, life long effects it has on it's victims.Krysten Ritters portrayal of a self destructive, nihilistic, deeply damaged, guilt ridden individual, bent on revenge while hampered by an innate compassion which both limits and motivates her actions, is perfect, and her sardonic wit is hilarious.I tend not to expect "Super Hero" stories to be a particularly meaningful, beyond their portrayal of obvious mythic archetypes, so when one comes along that is profoundly human, it's something special. Jessica Jones is something special.

I had intended submitting my own detailed review of Jessica Jones but previous reviewers (ExxWhyZee in particular) have given such comprehensive overviews of the first series that anything I added would only be superfluous. I will just content myself by saying as someone completely new to the mythology of Marvel Comics characters I was drawn to watching this after having enjoyed Season 1 of Daredevil and I wasn't disappointed - from the opening titles and music through to the final fade-out all the episodes made for gripping viewing. I'm looking forward to Season 2 and also the release of Luke Cage (good to see TGW's Lemond Bishop getting a lead role).On the question of "control" which is the driving theme of this programme can I suggest that those interested refer to Zoe Williams' article on "gaslighting" in The Guardian's Guide of 21-27 January 2017 where this cultural obsession as illustrated not only in Jessica Jones but also Homeland and Westworld is addressed.
