Novel idea, but limited play value

The Mario figure is a great idea, and as a starter set it indicates what you can do with the wider theme. Unfortunately, it is limited in the play appeal, as after going through the set a few times, and reordering to play again, the appeal was limited. Although digital integration in toys is sometimes good, this set feels slightly unnecessary, as more appeal was had simply recreating Mario levels using their imagination.

I'm impressed!

At first, I thought it was a bit overpriced until we got it assembled and working, totally worth the price! The quality is great and the Mario doll interacts not only with this set, but recognise the colour of other lego pieces and makes sounds: red=fire, blue=water, etc.Mario is super cute, he changes his facial expressions and displays pictures on the tiny screen on his belly.Would definitely recommend to any Mario/Lego fan

I love Mario and I love this

I have been a fan of Mario since I got a NES for Christmas: I remember excitedly going to Toys ‘R’ Us one birthday to buy a copy of Mario 3, I remember clubbing together with my brother to buy a SNES with Mario All Stars so obviously when I had kids of my own Mario would feature in their lives. I don’t know who was more excited when this line was first revealed, me or my son; either way this was a day one purchase.I know there is some animosity toward this line because it isn’t ‘mini figures’ and I am one of the voices who would love mini figure Mario but it is unfair to judge this on what it isn’t.What you get is the usual Nintendo innovation and the usual Lego fun. I actually really like the interactive nature of Lego Mario and, more importantly, so does my 6 year old son. I think it’s electronic component is fun.If you are unaware: Lego Mario is a battery powered toy that interacts with the rest of the Lego - put him on a red plate and he acts like he is getting burnt, put him on top of a Goomba and he collects a virtual coin etc. I think this works really well and is fun; it’s something different. From a display perspective I also think the line looks good. The Mario characters look good and I have got some displayed around the living room. The contents of this set are very robust as well and have taken a lot of playing with without falling to pieces which is always good for Lego. This set is the only one to come with the Mario character and also has a green pipe and a end level flag (all of which are needed to play the game of collecting coins in a time period). It’s also comes with a Bowser Jr. build and a goomba (both robust and well made). There are no stickers to be applied (which I appreciate with Lego) and has several nice printed pieces.Overall:Playability is very high and it still provides fun for all the kids.Durability is high as the main characters have all survived lots of playing.Buildability is low. It is easy to build but it isn’t a fun set to build because there isn’t much to build. I also don’t like that there are no physical instructions - it’s all on the tablet.Displayability is high but mainly because I love Mario and love seeing these characters in Lego form.Affordability is, at the original price of £50, I would say ok - it is understandable with all the tech being bought. At the £30 you often see it at now it is a very good price and I would highly recommend it.

Not bad, but the Kids got over it quite quickly

More of a novelty than anything. The kids had fun with it at first, but they got over it quite quickly. We've had it for a bit over a year and it's seen so little use we hadn't had to change the original batteries...

NO INSTRUCTIONS

This is a good set, and does cool stuff with the toy responding to stuff while you play, but apparently all children are now expected to be fully dependent on a tablet by age three or something because there are absolutely no paper instructions included for building the set, just a bit of paper directing you to download an app. After some searching we managed to find a PDF of the instructions on the Lego site, but it's just so unnecessary. No one wants to install an app just so their kid can build Lego!
