Charlotte's Piggy Bank Paperback – February 1, 2004

This is not a book for Preschoolers or babies. There is irony in many of David McKee's books, and only a six or seven year old could understand irony. The book plays with the cliché expectations of happy endings and good fairies, in a way contemporary kids are ready for.

I love this book because the illustrations are rich with things to wonder about and because the story arch is so surprising. It does not turn out good for hopeful, hard working Charlotte. But why is the pig stealing her money a bad message for kids? If there even is a message in this book it is that things don't always turn out the way you hoped they would which is as good a lesson as I can think of. And what a wonderful starting point for a conversation!

I got this book to read at my daughter's 2nd birthday party. Instead of gifts, we had all her friends bring some coins to help her start saving. It seemed like a good idea. The book ends with the pig saying "life is hard" and taking the little girl's (Charlotte) money. Really bad message to send.

Absolutely love this picture book! The engaging story seems at first predictable, but then offers up a most unexpected and hilarious/realistic ending. I first read this book in England and discovered I should have bought all of the author's work while I was there because they aren't so easy to find in the USA.And parents (and grandparents), before you read aloud a book to your kids, you need to read it first to make sure it will be appropriate for you audience. You can't judge this book by the pink piggy on the cover.8 years old and up.

My little niece loves this book. It is fun and exciting for this age group and also teaches the little ones quite few lessons about money and transactions in life and what's really important.

I thought McKee only did that stupid elephant series. the drawing, humour and twisted plot make this a fantastic dark story.
