It's a grate. How much can one say about a floor register? It's solid and fits the air plenum.

Sturdy material and Efficient design
I purchased this register while upgrading our HVAC from a 6 inch to 7 inch duct for more room CFM. Our house is older, and has this style of register. When received, I was pleasantly surprised that the unit was built to be very sturdy, almost as sturdy as our original, 80 year old ones! The grill pattern is also what I wanted, as it provides maximum flow through its thin, vertical grills. I did spray paint it to match my existing registers, but the paint on it from the factory is nice and well done.
