Q: Is there a ridge on the inside or are they smooth?

There are never any needles. You have to be lucky to get some. I never have.

Q: I'm struggling with the screw tightening (and loosening). 1st time of using hoops. Should I be able to tighten sufficiently with my fingers?

No, you have to use a screwdriver! It will feel tight but nowhere near tight enough, especially when fixing over embroidery. It’s also a good idea to wrap the underneath hoop with bias binding as this will stop it slipping.
