An enjoyable way to spend some time since 1942

The media could not be loaded.  Basically: two teams of 30 fight like chess pieces (but most pieces only move one square with no diagonals) but the twist is players can’t see what pieces are being played on the other side until they fight so it becomes a game of bluffing and keeping track of what has been revealed so far. Some pieces don’t move and are deadly to most pieces if attacked, so pieces are often not moved in order to trick the opponent into thinking they are dangerous. This game dates back to 1942 and has undergone changes over the years. It appears 40 pieces per player is more common than the 30 supplied in this version. The computer game tie-in with Assassin’s Creed is superficial and amounts to no much more than the pictures on the stickers and the names of the pieces. Otherwise it’s the standard game. There are a set of special rules included in the booklet (a total of four pages of English instructions) but I’ve not played this variation so far. That is probably a unique set of rules that only come with this version of the game.I have a history of playing a board game for a few weeks and become completely bored of it so Stratego has been deliberately rationed to a few games here and there. It’s too early to say if the game has staying power and depth but since it’s been around for decades, I’m sure it will not become discarded as a passing fancy. It’s fair to assume the game has substance to it.It’s been pleasurable to play so far. I can’t say it’s amazing but I can’t say anything bad about it. It’s an enjoyable way to spend some time. It’s a provisional 5 stars but I’ll update this review with any relevant information.

A Bit of DIY Needed, Great Easy-to-learn Strategy Game for the Whole Family

Our young son is fanatical about board games and is familiar with Assasin's Creed. We were regular visitors (pre-covid) to our local board games cafe, where you play a massive house collection of board games whilst you enjoy lunch together on-site. In fact, there's a big movement now with many board games cafes springing up internationally to collectively reminisce a bygone time. Our boy has never played Strategy before.Set up takes a bit of time. You are requested to stick 60 figures onto the 60 counter pieces. It gets a bit tedious after the first 2 dozen. Bearing in mind that this game is quite reasonably priced at under £15 a little bit of cutting corners in the manufacturing is to be expected. The finished pieces once all are stuck on do look a bit rough & ready. The instructions are written in English as a second language and thus the formatting of the crucial bits of the rules aren't as clear as one would expect. The play itself is pretty straightforward, in the same vein as the original Stratego, you have to capture your opponent's most precious arsenal, in the case, the Apple of Eden. The aim of the game is to seek and destroy enemy combatants, watching out for the land mines, stay alive and find the Apple which is hidden within the ranks before your foe finds yours. It's a simpler concept than Chess, though the layout of the board looks similar in the Assasin's Creed version. It's more in line with the strategy of 'Battleships' and suitable for ages 8 upwards. Our younger daughter aged 5, had a play with it today too - she has a good grasp of the rules, but her ability to strategise key pieces - such as the Apple of Eden, the Mines, the high ranking combatants and the miners, needs more experience. It is a good early introduction to strategy-type games, before she moves onto Chess.A game that's already become just as popular as Uno in our home and pretty decent value for money.5 stars

Good if you like board games

This IS a board game. So do not think about giving it to somebody who is not into them already. It is NOT a cheap substitute for the fun of the video game. It proceeds at the same stately pace as Monopoly without the enjoyable hiccups, of a role-playing game. I didn't like it or the cardboard counters, but that's not an objective point of view, is it? Within its niche it is indeed a 4 star product. Knock one or even two off if you are either a connoisseur or newbie with board games.

Assassin's Game

If you browse the shelves of a modern toy shop you will find countless varieties of childhood boardgames with other IPs added from The Simpsons to Harry Potter. Why not 'Stratego'? This is a classic board game that appeals to the more nerdish players like me growing up. You set the pieces up and then face off against the other player. Each token has a score, and your aim is to top trump the other player's piece and take it off the board until you win the Apple of Eden (in this case). It can be a simple game, but you soon find that placement, movement and bluff can make it far more complex. The difference with this version is that it is 'Stratego - Assassin's Creed'. As a gamer I know the franchise well. It works in terms of the boardgame as it has always been the Assassins versus the Templars. You can easily play the game not knowing any lore of the computer games - having played them, it is probably best not to delve too deep as it is complex. You are required to setup the stickers on first play which is annoying but keeps the cost down. The box is fantastic and the board nice and thick. The instructions are clear enough to follow should you be new to the game, but it is best suited for the 8+ as you gain more from advanced techniques. Even as a Stratego game, this works and as a gamer I enjoyed the added Assassin's Creed elements.
